Grand Puba, rapper and emcee, is best known as one of the members of the group Brand Nubian. 2000 is his second solo studio album and was released in 1995 and hit number 5 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums in the US and got 4 mics from The Source. The album is 2Pac's commentary on contemporary social issues facing American society such as racism, police brutality, poverty, black on black crime, and teenage pregnancy. It featured three singles; "Brenda's Got a Baby", "Trapped", and "If My Homie Calls". The album was initially released on T.N.T. Recordings and Interscope Records, which at the time was distributed through Eastwest Records America and Atlantic Records. Following Shakur's death, Amaru Entertainment (established by his mother Afeni Shakur) obtained the rights to this album. The album generated significant controversy stemming from then-U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle's public criticism after Ronald Ray Howard murdered a Texas state trooper and his defense attorney claimed he was influenced by 2Pacalypse Now and it's strong theme of police brutality. Quayle made the statement, "There's no reason for a record like this to be released. It has no place in our society."

First trained in his church choir, Blueprint played in R&B bands in high school and later developed a reputation as a standout rapper. On Adventures in Counter-Culture, he experiments with the synths, keyboards, and drum machines that connected the musical dots of those early days.
 
Print began pursuing his career as a musician in 2001, working on several hip hop projects including his collaborative project Soul Position with DJ/Producer RJD2. Releasing The Unlimited EP & 8,000,000 Stories on Rhymesayers Entertainment with RJ, Blueprint began work in 2004 on what would become his first solo album, 1988. The success of that album allowed him to tour extensively throughout North America and Europe, before returning home to focus on writing and recording his next album.
 
When he sat down to work on this sophomore effort, Print began with the dark, soulful and sample heavy hip hop of the early 90’s, but soon found himself hitting a creative wall. What shook him loose was a new mission: to create an album that encompassed every facet of music he knew, blurring genre lines and bringing it back home as one cohesive listening experience. The more he worked to pair new found interest in rock & electronic music with his love of hip hop, the more he was able to break down that creative barrier.
 
Thus began his Adventures in Counter-Culture, a monumental undertaking that would involve reinventing himself as a musician and person. His growing cynicism with the world, his disdain for pop culture, the state of politics, and an apathetic, uninspired society, all worked as fuel to inspire this sophomore album. Moved by the impact that sampling lawsuits were having on the music community, Blueprint also decided to return to his roots and began writing and producing his own original content.

Not one to follow conventional song structures or methods, ELWD focuses more on loops blended with live instrumentation and abstract directions, to evoke a feeling that ends whenever it feels right. Sometimes merging two beats into one, his dynamic approach gives every project a fresh flow that has you engaged from start to finish. Opener 'dreamdntsleep' sets the soulful spirit instantly, the common thread throughout the record's narrative. 'inbloom' continues this upbeat feeling, with heavy hitting drum breaks and mashed up samples. But things get gradually more mellow and then eerie towards the end of side one, rolling effortlessly into side two with a reflective and conscious edge. The degraded saxophone on 'lottalivin' gives the melody a more haunting feel while still remaining infectious and 'yemaybe' features a distant contemplative voice over live keys and drums, feeding furtherinto the album's unique theme and direction. Ambient music also plays a part in ELWD's influences and closing tracks 'newcolours' and 'noicecream' offer weightless, meditational pieces that end the album on an optimistic note. To close, in ELWD's own words: "I tried to narrow down many feelings and thoughts from the past year. It's very personal to me and I hope the people dig it.".

One of the many Wu-affiliates to debut on the The Swarm compilation, The Black Knights was originally associated with the group North Star (also from California) with whom they recorded as Black Knights Of The North Star. However, the groups have since separated. In 2001, the Black Knights released their debut album Every Night Is A Black Knight with limited distribution, and also reunited with North Star for the closing song (titled "Black Knights Of The North Star") on North Star's debut album. In 2005, they re-released their debut to worldwide distribution. Member Doc Doom was shot and killed in Compton CA on February 11, 2007. Rugged Monk and Crisis carried on and have recorded a trio of albums with Frusiante.

18-year-old El Paso-native singer/songwriter, Khalid, burst onto the music scene with his first single "Location", which received great critical acclaim. The explosion of indie Hip Hop labels in the early 90s resulted in an ongoing snowball effect that started to shift the narrative around an artist’s need to sign to a major label. Coincidentally, quality home recording equipment was also becoming more easily accessible and, with the rising popularity of CD-R technology, this allowed artists to write, record, and manufacture their own albums right at home.

Appleseed was a highly celebrated and influential release from that era, cementing Aesop Rock as a new face whose talent could not be denied. The album explores creative concepts with inventive writing and stripped-down yet melodic and melancholic production. Six out of the eight songs were produced byAesop Rock, with OmegaOne producing “Sick Friend” and longtime collaborator Blockhead handling “1000 Deaths”, and the project’s sole guest lyricist was Doseone.

The DIY process was followed in every aspect, as Aesop himself recalls, “I did the Appleseed hand style while working at Tepper Galleries in NYC. The cover was made at Kinko’s. The first Appleseed CD’s were CD-R’s I duped at home and sold from my backpack at an MF DOOM show at Brownies, which was right below my apartment at the time. I continued to sell hand to hand inNY, while Blockhead started fielding some mail orders from a young internet. People would send us cash or a check, and he’d cut the covers out and mail them off.“

The two of them were able to move a couple thousand CDs that way before turning their attention to newer projects, particularly Float in Aesop’s case. As a result, Appleseed went out of print for many years before resurfacing as a merch item on tour. However, in all that time it was only available on CD, directly from Aesop.

Growing up in a dysfunctional home in Minneapolis, there were two things Joshua Turner turned to for comfort when his parents fought: the records he'd listen to on a loop to drown out their conflict and the atlas he'd pore over to pretend he was anywhere else. Turner's all grown up now, but his sources of childhood refuge continue to play an integral role in his life. In his spare time he draws maps for fun, and, under the name Dem Atlas, he's composing his emotionally complex hip-hop records aimed at listeners who are in need of some sonic solace of their own. His new album, Bad Actress, represents the culmination of a twisting creative path that Turner's patiently been following since his teens. He was a poet, a painter, and the frontman for a rock band before he found his space in Minneapolis' prolific rap scene.
