Foolish Seasons [RSD 2022]

ON SALE $27.98 Vinyl: $27.31 Buy

Dana Gillespie’s debut album, Foolish Seasons, is one of the great lost albums of 1960’s British pop. This very rare and sought-after 1968 album from the legendary British singer/songwriter was only released in the U.S. and over the years its reputation among collectors has only grown. Although it never came out in England, Decca Records kept the masters to the intended U.K. pressing which is now being released on vinyl. It contains two previously unreleased, self-penned tracks – the blue-eyed soul bop “Goin’ Round in Circles” and the orchestral “Come to My Arms” which could almost have been a Bond theme.

Side A:
1. You Just Gotta Know My Mind
2. Tears In My Eyes
3. Life Is Short
4. Souvenirs Of Stefan
5. Can't You See I'm Dreaming
6. Goin' Round In Circles
7. No, No, No, No, No
Side B:
8. He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not
9. London Social Degree
10. Dead
11. Foolish Reasons
12. Where Will You Be
13. Come To My Arms
14. Hard Lovin' Loser

HIGH-DEFINITION PREMIUM VINYL PRESSING FOR SUPER FIDELITY INCLUDES 2 BONUS TRACKS! This essential LP edition presents one of Hopkins' finest albums, "Mojo Hand", which was originally issued in 1962 on Bobby Robinson's label, Fire Records. (The LP would be retitled Lightnin' Hopkins just two years later for the Sphere Sounds imprint re-release, featuring a different cover-sleeve.) Mojo Hand is widely regarded as one of the true masterpieces from Hopkins' catalog. The material ranges from classic blues to R&B-flavored numbers. There's even a charming novelty Christmas blues, titled "Santa." These are moody and powerful performances. Despite the variety, the album is remarkably cohesive because Hopkins' amalgamation of styles can be heard within each song.

ON SALE $42.99 Vinyl: $39.42 Buy

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

2014 180 gram audiophile vinyl pressing reissue. First pressing of 1500 worldwide numbered copies are pressed on white vinyl. Briefcase Full of Blues is the debut album by The Blues Brothers, originally released in 1978. The Blues Brothers, more formally called The Blues Brothers' Show Band and Revue, began as an affectionate comedic tribute to R&B music featuring comedy actors Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, as part of a musical sketch on Saturday Night Live. Belushi (lead vocalist "Joliet Jake" Blues) and Aykroyd (harmonica player/backing vocalist Elwood Blues) fronted a band which was composed of well-known and respected session musicians. Soon after three SNL performances, the band began to take on a life beyond television, releasing an album, Briefcase Full of Blues, and then having the Hollywood film The Blues Brothers created around it's characters in 1980. The track listing of Briefcase Full of Blues boasts infectious covers of songs by Otis Redding, Junior Wells, King Floyd, Sam & Dave and Big Joe Turner, amongst others. Backing up Jake & Elwood are Stax heroes Donald - Duck- Dunn and Steve Cropper, Paul Shaffer and other seasoned session men. The album reached #1 on the Billboard 200 and went double Platinum. Two singles were released, "Rubber Biscuit", which reached number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 and "Soul Man", which reached number 14.

It is tempting to play up the "Italian Connection" on Joey's newest record. With Joey's previous nod toward the Goodfellas it would easy to claim that Frank Sinatra is the natural next step. But the simple fact of the matter is that this is tribute of one master of American Music to another. Perhaps no other singer in history defined the American Popular Songbook as Frank Sinatra and it is only natural that Joey DeFrancesco ? so instrumental in defining the new B-3 sound ? would turn to wealth of exceptional material from the Sinatra discography. Great music is great music and Joey knows it and has surrounded himself with great sidemen. The great Houston Person on tenor sax is on hand as is groove master guitarist Melvin Sparks and Joey's drummer of choice, Byron Landham. Together they swing through six tunes recorded by Sinatra and, while far from mimicking the original arrangements, they pay tribute to the legacy of Sinatra, refracted through the prism of their own talent and imagination.

Whitney Shay

Stand Up! [LP]

ON SALE $22.98 Vinyl: $19.51 Buy

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

2020 release. Stand Up! It's not just an album title, it's an order, forcing anyone who hears Whitney Shay's brand of rocket-fueled R&B onto the dancefloor. A flame-haired stick of dynamite in a sparkling dress, this San Diego phenomenon has made a record for dancing, drinking and dreaming, with songs to soundtrack the peaks and punches of life. Stand Up! Is sure to mark the global explosion of a singer-songwriter who's long been threatening to go 'boom'.

Coming up the old-fashioned way - with a thousand word-of-mouth shows blazing her reputation across the planet - Shay's first decade has seen four wins at the San Diego Music Awards, a nomination at last year's prestigious Blues Music Awards and the tag of "future blues icon" bestowed by Blues Matters! #magazine. Whether you picked up 2012's debut album, Soul Tonic, caught up with her on 2018's acclaimed A Woman Rules The World - or heard her songs on major TV networks including HBO and NBC - you're probably already a fan, whether you realise it or not. But having signed to Ruf last year, Shay is set to paint the world red in 2020.

Tracking at Austin's Wire Recording Studio with producer Kaz Kazanoff, Stand Up! #saw the singer let the good vibes flow. Setting the pace with the title track's brassy soul and smoky quickfire vocal, this new record's upbeat moments twist from the rolling groove of Tell The Truth to the dirtied-up funk of P.S. It's Not About You, with Shay's all-star studio band rising to the occasion.

For the last 30 years, Medeski Martin & Wood have explored the boundaries of modern jazz, incorporating hip hop, avant-garde, world music, and electronic funk influences into their fearless improvisational style. Its title taken from the first line of “Old Angel Midnight” by Jack Kerouac (himself a legendary improviser), 1995’s Friday Afternoon in the Universe flings a whole lot at the wall and just about everything sticks, with mid-‘70s Miles Davis the predominant hue in an ever-changing sonic palette. “Chubb Sub” is a favorite, and was used prominently in the Get Shorty soundtrack, but even the most abstract numbers groove and move. Ronnie Wood's first solo album in nearly a decade doubles as a live tribute to one of his musical heroes, Chuck Berry. Named after an instrumental originally featured on Chuck's 1960 LP Rockin' At The Hops, Mad Lad: A Live Tribute to Chuck Berry was recorded live at Wimborne's Tivoli Theatre and finds the Rolling Stones guitarist also holding down vocal duties with guest appearances from singer Imelda May and pianist Ben Waters. In addition to the tracks "Tribute to Chuck Berry" written by Wood and "Worried Life Blues" written by Maceo Merriweather, the 11-track collection includes renditions of further Chuck Berry classics like "Johnny B Goode," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Rock 'N' Roll Music," "Back in the U.S.A." and "Little Queenie." Mad Lad will be the first in a trilogy to be recorded by Wood and the band in the coming years, each paying tribute to Ronnie's musical heroes. Though the trio of John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood had already expanded the jazz genre with their first three records (two of which we have reissued here at Real Gone Music), it was this 1996 album that really crossed over and won the ensemble a whole new legion of listeners in the “jam band” camp. Recorded in a remote, solar-powered plywood shack in Hawaii (hence the title), Shack-Man brought the ‘70s soul-jazz beloved by the band firmly into the ‘90s, propelled by Medeski’s simultaneously nostalgic yet forward-thinking excursions on the Hammond B-3. Bobby Band Blue

ON SALE $34.99 Vinyl: $32.46 Buy

Bobby 'Blue' Bland (1930 - 2013) was one of the leading US-American Blues, R&B and Soul entertainers. He knew how to combine the intensity of Gospel music with the expression of the Blues. His voice sounded as he wanted to bear witness to one's resolve but he was able to let his voice sound soft, sometimes cool but always cultivated. Thus he also reached out to the fans of Frank Sinatra and Nat 'King' Cole with tremendous success. He formed his remarkable style of singing out of many different influences, characteristic and exclusively reserved for Bobby 'Blue' Bland. Blands voice was always the center of attention. After his huge successes during the 1950s and 1960s for the Duke label, he moved to ABC Dunhill when Duke was sold. He could reach a wider white audience in the early 1970s with his two LPs, 'His California Album' and 'Dreamer', plus productions together with B.B. King. 'Dreamer' was the record company's trial to produce an album in California with the cool Soul appeal of the city of Los Angeles. As a timeless Soul and Blues classic the album contains the in recent years often sampled track Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City, one of the musical back bones to one of the favorites by Jay Z. The whole album is a wonderful soundtrack for those lonely nights alone and blue in a sleazy joint trying to forget a lost love in a bottle of bourbon. 'Dreamer' is the warm velvet cover against cold loneliness with so many great songs like I Wouldn't Treat A Dog (The Way You Treated Me) and Whose Foolin' Who?, the bluesy Cold Day In Hell, Lovin' On Borrowed Time and When You Come To The End Of Your Road. I Ain't Gonna Be The First To Cry has indeed the lyrical quality of The Thrill Is Gone. The production by Steve Barri and Michael Omartian sounds full and ponderous. The accompanying musicians, amongst them guitarists Dean Parks and Larry Carlton, bassist Wilton Felder and drummer Ed Green, belong to the cream of L.A.'s studio musicians.

Recorded in 1959 at the legendary Van Gelder Studios in Hackensack, New Jersey, this is considered one of Donald Byrd's finest LPs. Byrd had a fruitful run in the late '50s with the great baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams and here they are joined by tenor-man Charlie Rouse, and a great rhythm section like on "Devil Whip", an energetic tune with a nice call-andresponse theme between the horns and the rhythm section. Here Byrd impresses with a few incredibly long phrases in his solo, however he still manages to play with very clear and logical phrasing. Other highlights are Frank Sinatra's "Witchcraft", the self-penned blues "Here I Am" and the Walter Davis written grooves "Bronze Dance" and "Clarion Calls".

Vinyl: $57.76 UNAVAILABLE

MP3 Album: $5.99 Download

An impressive live album by Marvin Peterson who was one of the finest trumpeters in the '60s-'70s is making it's return on vinyl format. These tracks were performed by the band led by Hannibal Marvin Peterson, though he had yet to add  'Hannibal' to his name at the time of recording. Here, he performed with eight musicians in his hometown of Texas, and their performance crossed the boundaries of jazz, soul and funk with skilled musicians. These included organist Eugene Carrier who also participated in the BB King Band and drummer Emry Thomas who would later participate in the band led by Johnny 'Guitar' Watson. With a glance at the cover art, you can get a sense of the powerful and passionate live recording that brought joy to it's many fans. The opening 'Groove for Otis' (M1) with a jazz-funk whose edgy beat excites rare-groove fans. 'Our Groove' (M4) is also a fine track that has a slick bassline and Eugene's organ fusing in harmony.  P-VINE is very proud to be repressing this record with it's intimate feeling akin to being there in the crowd as the mighty Peterson walks up to take center stage.
