Triple vinyl LP pressing. Soul Jazz Records' Life Between Islands collection is inspired by the launch of Tate Britain's exhibition of the same name, exploring the links between Caribbean and British art and culture from the 1950s to now. The album focuses on the most important Black British musical styles to emerge out of the distinctly Caribbean world of sound systems, featuring an all-star line-up including Dennis Bovell, Shut Up and Dance, Cymande, Digital Mystikz, Brown Sugar, Funk Masters, Janet Kay, Ragga Twins ' a lightning-rod journey across Roots Reggae, Jungle/Drum & Bass, Jazz-Funk, Lovers Rock, Jazz and Dubstep. Many of the tracks represent how Black British artists defined their own identity, such as Brown Sugar's righteous 'Black Pride' and Tabby Cat Kelly's powerful 'Don't Call Us Immigrants'. Aside from being musically rooted in the distinctly Jamaican-born phenomenon of the sound system, much of this identity is also shaped by the triangular relationship of being British-born, of Caribbean heritage, and with an equal love of African-American Jazz, Funk and Soul, as evidenced with many Lovers Rock reggae covers of American soul tunes. This stateside influence can also be heard in groups such as the Funk Masters whose jazz-funk music successfully crossed over into New York's clubland, and the great Cymande, whose unique street-funk became staple material for numerous US hip-hop artists. In the early 1990s, jungle and drum & bass artists took the essence of reggae's soundsystem culture ' MCs, dubplates, crews ' and applied them to their own music, combining heavy reggae bass lines with intense double-speed drum breakbeats. At the new movement's forefront were Shut Up and Dance, working closely with The Ragga Twins. In the early 2000s, dubstep, spearheaded by Digital Mystikz, became the latest instalment in this ever-evolving soundsystem culture. This collection shows how these many styles were interconnected.

Soul Revivers

On The Grove

ON SALE $29.98 Vinyl: $22.39 Buy

Soul Revivers's On The Grove is an ambitious and passionate collaboration project from Nick Manasseh and David Hill. It features musicians spanning seven decades, including Jamaican legends Ernest Raglin, Ken Boothe, Earl 16 and Devon Russell alongside contemporary artists including jazz trumpeter Ms. Maurice and vocalist Alexia Coley. The roots of Soul Revivers lie in film. In late 2017, David Hill was asked to act as music and creative consultant for Idris Elba's Yardie. David and Nick's subsequent productions for the film provided the spark for what would become the album. On The Grove was produced at Yard Studios, under the Westway, below the charred hulk of Grenfell. It is a journey through the moodier side of reggae, and a progression in the ever evolving, yet timeless nature of the music. It is also a tribute to it's long connection to West London, and in particular, Ladbroke Grove and Notting Hill. The album sleeve features Charlie Phillips's photograph of Lepke (founder of Dread Broadcasting Platform) setting up for the Notting Hill Carnival in the late '70s. Alongside the featured artists, there are stellar performances throughout, from an extraordinary range of London's most talented musicians, completing the next chapter in the musical mythology of West London reggae.

The center and founder of the group, singer/songwriter Louis Morales, didn't want the name to be the identification of the band, but be more about the music and the experience. Dem first appeared in 2016 as Morales' stage name, when he was playing gigs in his hometown of Galveston, TX. He quickly began to collect musicians into his project, leading him to today's solid cast of six: Pat Kelly (drums) and Kevin B (lead guitar) of The Suffers, Liam Haney (bass) of Houston's Third Coast Roots, Sel Philips Caveraz (drums), and Allison Lopez (sax). As the world was locking down at the start of 2020, Dem's Pat, Allison, Sel, and Louis joined forces with Austin musicians Dane Folton (bass, Lion Heights), Jeremy Carlson (keys, Lion Heights), and Mario Salazar (lead guitar) to Tall Sky Studios in Austin, where they recorded their first album. Citing it as being a positive but strange experience to record during shut-down, the band quickly realized that the overarching message of the music was about understanding yourself - a phrase that everyone can relate to.

Wailers / U-Roy

My Cup Runneth Over

ON SALE $30.98 Vinyl: $29.25 Buy

In 1976, U Roy was the new attraction in Jamaican music. With his first hit Wake the Town six years earlier, he had imposed a new style on the Kingston sound systems, which consisted of taking up local hits by speaking in "voice over" around the choruses. That year he took on the Wailers' Soul Rebel, which he transformed into the Natty Rebel, which would become his absolute hit until today. Fifty years later, U Roy, who is approaching 80, delivers an entire album around the Wailers discography. A project initiated by the American producer Gary Himelfarb under the alias Doctor Dread, who arrived in Jamaica in 1977 and who signed the biggest names of the time on his label RAS Records, from Black Uhuru to Jimmy Cliff via Bunny Wailer, Inner Circle or Gregory Isaacs. In the fold of Sanctuary Records, which also owns reggae reissue giant Trojan Records, Doctor Dread obtained permission to use the Wailers tracks recorded by Lee Perry in the early 1970s. He then locked himself in a Kingston studio with U Roy, who recorded 14 songs in four hours (!), Freestyled as in the great times. Bunny Wailer, the last survivor of the original trio, was also present to witness this historic session, which pits two icons of Jamaican reggae from the '70s against each other.

There has always been a Reggae influence in the music of El Michels Affair. From their cover of "Hung Up On My Baby" done in a Reggae style, to the general sound and approach that permeates Leon's production style. While recording Bailey's 2020 Ekundayo album, they did some straight forward reggae tunes inspired by different eras alongside some modern R&B tracks that would fit more comfortably next to Frank Ocean than Jacob Miller. It is this same notion that old and new can live so comfortably together that birthed the idea of Ekundayo Inversions.Traditional dub came out of reggae in the late 60s and early 70s when pioneers like King Tubby and Lee Perry started taking the multi track recordings of songs and running them back through the board adding effects and additional instrumentation. These recordings are called "dubs" or "versions" and are typically instrumentals with flourishes of vocals from the original tracks. El Michels decided to use the blueprints left behind and make something using the influences of today. He wound up straying so far from the traditional format that it didn't seem right to use the word 'Dub', hence Ekundayo Inversions. All the songs are tied together by WhatsApp messages between Leon and Liam that perfectly narrate the story of this record and their working relationship. One of the highlights of Ekundayo Inversions is a guest appearance from the legendary Lee "Scratch" Perry on the "Ugly Truth" version. L$P switches between singing and talking, proclaiming his powers one minute and playing with the track's title the next. On "Awkward Pt.2" Leon takes one of the most experimental songs from Ekundayo and actually straightens it out. A track that once seemed to be floating in space has now been anchored by the addition of drums and bass. "Faded", a version of "Paper Tiger", is given the full EMA treatment with the addition of emotive horns over an uncomfortably sparse rhythm track peppered with Liam's voice drenched in delay and echo. "Champions" features a verse from Black Thought of The Roots and halfway through, El Michels sends the rhythm section 50 years back.At the end of the day, Ekundayo Inversions is a testament to how strong the original songs are. Whether they're in a R&B style, reggae style, stripped down to their bare bones, or loaded with production, the songs will move you.

Elroy Bailey

Red Hot Dub [180 Gram]

ON SALE $19.99 Vinyl: $17.77 Buy

Debut solo album from the Black Slate singer originally released in 1979. Now released on 180 gram vinyl. 'Red Hot Dub', originally released in 1979 through West London's Burning Sounds label and credited to Elroy Bailey, is a superior dub based collection that showcases subtle, masterful musicianship rather than electronic pyrotechnics and studio trickery. The album provides a perfect example of just how far UK reggae had progressed by that time and that the children of the Jamaican diaspora, together with a multitude of musical accomplices, could now stand shoulder to shoulder with their Kingston counterparts.

The Return of Jack Sparrow

ON SALE $29.98 Vinyl: $28.79 Buy

Reggae legend, Leonard Dillon, known as the Ethiopian, was the founder of one of Jamaica's premier ska, rocksteady, and early reggae sensations The Ethiopians, but got his start under the name Jack Sparrow. His early solo Jack Sparrow single efforts, some backed by The Wailers, didn't yield any hits and prompted him to form a group, The Ethiopians, where he found his first success. So popular was their track "Train To Skaville," that The Ethiopians were able to tour beyond Jamaica and they headed to the U.K. in 1968. "Train To Skaville" sold over 50,000 copies in Jamaica and made a slight appearance on the U.K. charts where it left a lasting impression. So much so, it was later covered by The Selector during the ska revival during the early '80s.
