The Offspring

Smash [Remastered]

ON SALE $23.98 Vinyl: $16.69 Buy

Smash is the third studio album by American punk rock band The Offspring. After touring in support of their previous album, Ignition (1992), The Offspring began recording Smash in October 1993 at Track Record in North Hollywood, California. Recording and production were finished two months later, and the album was released on April 8, 1994 on Epitaph Records. Smash incorporates elements of punk rock and grunge. In the United States, Smash has sold over six million copies and has been certified 6x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Peaking at number four on the US Billboard 200, it has sold over 11 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling independent label album of all time. It was also the first album released on Epitaph Records to obtain gold and platinum status. Smash was The Offspring's introduction into worldwide popularity and critical acclaim, and produced a number of hit singles including the hugely successful "Come Out and Play", "Self Esteem" and "Gotta Get Away" singles. Alongside Bad Religion's Stranger than Fiction, Green Day's Dookie and Rancid's... And Out Come the Wolves, Smash was responsible for bringing punk rock back into mainstream, and helped define the sound of the emerging pop punk scene in the 1990s. As a fan-favorite, the album received generally positive reviews from critics and garnered attention from major labels, including Columbia Records, with whom The Offspring would sign in 1996. Smash is the only release where the band was referred to as "Offspring".

Everything Sucks

ON SALE $23.98 Vinyl: $16.69 Buy

Everything Sucks is the fifth studio album by American punk rock band the Descendents, released in 1996 through Epitaph Records. It was their first album of new studio material since 1987's All, after which singer Milo Aukerman had left the band to pursue a career in biochemistry. The remaining members (bassist Karl Alvarez, guitarist Stephen Egerton, and drummer Bill Stevenson) had changed the band's name to All and released eight albums between 1988 and 1995 with singers Dave Smalley, Scott Reynolds, and Chad Price. When Aukerman decided to return to music the group chose to operate as two acts simultaneously, playing with Aukerman as the Descendents and with Price as All.

Adolescents

ON SALE $22.98 Vinyl: $22.44 Buy

2002 vinyl LP reissue. The raw energy of The Adolescents announced the birth of the So. Cal. Punk scene. Brash lyrics and furious playing were their hallmarks that led to a cult status among punk afficianados. Their self-titled album from 1981 set the proverbial stage for everyone from The Dead Kennedys to Green Day and Offspring. Scoring a punk hit with "Amoeba," The Adolescents soon outgrew each other and split apart. Yet their attitude and high-intensity playing live on. Original copies of their only LP are nearly impossible to find, but this reissue on vinyl is a treat for punk fans and collectors. It is one of those rare albums you just can't miss. Propagandhi

Failed States

ON SALE $23.98 Vinyl: $16.69 Buy

Vinyl LP pressing. 2012 release from the Canadian Progressive Thrash legends. Propagandhi join the Epitaph roster with Failed States just in time for their politically engaged anthems to form a soundtrack to that magical theatrical production known as the US elections. Failed States is the band's sixth album, and their second as a four piece with the addition of Dave "The Beaver" Guillas on guitar. This has led to a distinctive thickening and fortifying of the band's sound, to the point where they now achieve maximum heaviness, in a good way. For example, in past years, their live show has been described as both "alright" and "ok. " with the addition of the Beaver to the arsenal, it is now being hailed as "decent" and "satisfactory. " This is most definitely the best Propagandhi album yet, full of loud, fast, indignant songs that stick in your head.

Green Day's dazzlingly ambitious 2004 rock opera American Idiot, with it's striking caricature of "the President gas man", didn't just chime with the anti- Bush post-Iraq invasion zeitgeist; it increasingly came to define it. Five years on, 21st Century Breakdown picks up broadly where it's predecessor left off, it's 17 songs attempting to make sense of what it means to be angry and alive amid the figurative and literal wreckage left behind by Dubya's presidency. The bad guy may have been run out of town, but this is less a victory parade than a trenchant to-do list, an album that's as complex as the era that shaped it.

Big Black

Lungs EP [Vinyl]

ON SALE $15.98 Vinyl: $14.23 Buy

Sensibly the most developmental and skeletal of Big Black's releases, Steve Albini's first official contribution to the rock world is a batch of sparse, minimal new wave recorded cheaply in two different apartment locations. With the exception of some sax provided by John Bohnen, everything is done by the young Albini, then a student at Northwestern. Not-so-pleasant views of morality "I Can Be Killed", post-mortem fornication with an army vet "Dead Billy", and primal living "Steelworker" provide some of the subject matter, matching the bleakly realist lyricism of Swans with a slight bastardization of the precise, jagged minimalism of Wire, Devo, and Suicide. Limited to a trebly buzz and augmented by a Casiotone, the guitar has little of the electrifying clamor and rattle of later releases. Throughout, Albini sounds about as angry as a youth from the wilds of Montana could possibly be -- and lord only knows how much resourcefulness was required to be exposed to his influences. Locating to the Chicago area obviously helped; who knows what this man would have done if he hadn't found an outlet for his aggressions? [Lungs was later issued on CD as part of The Hammer Party, originally on Homestead and later on Touch & Go. It was also reissued in its own vinyl version.]

In a world ruled increasingly by superstition and intolerance, Bad Religion's rousing wall-of-sound punk seems about as necessary now as ever before. It is the impassioned sound of reason, anthems of a bittersweet idealism and a guarded hope set to propulsive guitars and charging drumbeats. And while most groups with even half the artistic output have long ago morphed into stylistic self parody, Bad Religion is currently surging forward with a renewed creative intensity. Their fourteenth album is both a nod to the band's defiant past and an undeniable step forward in the evolution of a genre they helped define.
