In tow was the trio he had been exploring new soundscapes with in the past year: virtuoso bassist David Izenzon, equally adept playing arco and pizzicato, and simpatico drummer Charles Moffett, shining with his textured cymbals and spanking rimshots.

On At the Golden Circle, Volume One, Ornette and Co. are in topdrawer form. Writing in the liner notes of the 2002 Blue Note RVG CD reissue of the album, John Litweiler, author of the book Ornette Coleman: A Harmolodic Life, calls the album “extraordinary,” adding that “the sheer creativity of Ornette Coleman’s improvising here would be miraculous at any time in jazz history; moreover, even by his own high standards, he made some of the finest music of his recording career at the Golden Circle.” Comprising four Coleman originals, Volume One opens with the emcee introducing the trio and Ornette shyly replying, “We’ve so enjoyed ourselves here and hope everyone else has also.” He then whips into the brisk dance “Faces and Places,” which features his ebullient alto whimsy. It’s an expansive song of joy, taken at bop speed, flowing with a bouncy lyricism and heightened by his high-pitched wails. Coleman’s improvisational enthusiasm continues on “European Echoes,” a track of simultaneous group improvisations that starts off as an off-kilter waltz. He toots the tune in a catchy—and unusual—calliope-like style.
TRACKS:
SIDE A
A1 Faces And Places
A2 European Echoes
SIDE B
B1 Dee Dee
B2 Dawn

Format: Vinyl

Released: 01/28/2022

Released: 01/28/2022

Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0620/5023/8545/files/ornette-coleman-at-the-golden-circle-stockholm-volume-1-180-gram-vinyl-blue-note-poet-series_6NyCw.jpg?v=1762471514
ornette-coleman-crisis-vinyl
Crisis (Vinyl)
Ornette Coleman - Crisis (Vinyl)
Barcode: 5060672888851

Genre: Jazz

Format: Vinyl

Format Detail: LP

Released: 11/17/23

Internal ID: JITFE

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 72 hours for this item's shipment.**

Ornette Coleman - Change Of The Century (Vinyl)
Barcode: 8055515234220

Released: 11/24/23

Genre: Jazz

Format Detail: LP

Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0620/5023/8545/files/ornette-coleman-change-of-the-century_aiM3z.jpg?v=1759471128
ornette-coleman-tomorrow-is-the-question-vinyl
Tomorrow Is The Question! Originally released on Atlantic (1317). Includes original release liner notes by Martin Williams.
As the 50s ended, Ornette Coleman became the new herald of the future of jazz, surpassing for a time, even John Coltrane. Intent on feeling and with often scant regard for technique, he plunged headlong into a musical form that defied categorization and dismayed orthodox musicologists. Especially aware of the blues, Coleman eschewed a rigid structure in the music and favoured instead explorations of its poetic content. Free jazz to Coleman and his followers was jazz freed not only from musical restraints but also from sociological and cultural parameters. Lewis was sure that Coleman would open up new paths for jazz, and his opinion is reflected in the title of the album - ""The Shape Of Jazz To Come"". After the rather worn-out hard bop routine of the past years, this music was like a breath of fresh air. The fast numbers (""Eventuality"", ""Chronology"") remind one of wildly hyped-up bebop. Other numbers (""Congeniality"", ""Focus On Sanity"") juggle with catchy, almost folk like short motifs. This album contains two of Coleman's most beautiful compositions: ""Peace"" and ""Lonely Woman"", which was later given lyrics and often heard in it's vocal version. The Mulligan-Baker Quartet provided the model for the pianoless quartet - and when the band swings along once in a while with a moderato tempo, it is truly reminiscent of cool jazz. Be that as it may, the two wind instrumentalists just love the frenetic 'cry' and the intentionally 'imprecise' interplay. Clearly defined stanzas or traditional harmonic forms were not for them. The jazz musicologist Peter N. Wilson wrote: ""A record, which is not unjustifiably so entitled® about this LP which was given 5 stars by the magazine Rolling Stone. ""This Speakers Corner reissue LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. [LP]

Ornette Coleman, who died in June 2015 from cardiac arrest, must be counted as one of the most influential musicians in the jazz genre. His importance does not only lie in his ground-breaking recordings in the late Fifties and early Sixties, but lies more significantly in the educational effect of his work - in the fact that he always went beyond himself to the very end. Just a little more than a month after his ground-breaking release ""Free Jazz"", Coleman recorded the present album, in which he perhaps distanced himself somewhat from the conceptual idea, but still guided his quartet to ever more richness of detail and creativity. ""Ornette!"" was the first recording with bass-player Scott LaFaro and Coleman, and the difference in approach between LaFaro and Charlie Haden is noticeable from the very first note of ""W. R. U. "". His playing is more direct and agile, and one can hear how he drives Coleman and Don Cherry actively onwards and more aggressively than Haden's warm, languid phrasing. The tracks, with titles that are taken from the works of Sigmund Freud, are all gems and serve as a wonderful starting point for the musicians' improvisations. By now, Coleman felt himself comfortable in lengthy pieces, and neither he nor his fellow musicians had trouble in filling out time, never once lacking for new ideas. Ed Blackwell deserves a special mention - he shows himself here at his very best. ""Ornette!"" is a superb release and an absolute must for all fans of Coleman and creative, improvised music in general. On ""Ornette On Tenor"", his sixth LP for the label (not counting outtakes compilations), he switches to tenor saxophone, but the great enrichment of this record is the participation of Jimmy Garrison on double bass. Compared to his previous recording ""Ornette!"" (with Scott LaFaro on the bass), these recordings are earthier, darker. Garrison integrates seamlessly into Coleman's sound world. And he accompanies Coleman's tenor saxophone to perfection. He appears to have a lot of fun with his instrument, which he played previously in rhythm and blues combos. His musical lines breathe precisely this atmosphere, and sometimes one might believe one is listening to a ""free"" Coleman Hawkins. Ever since his instrument was damaged in an assault, Coleman played relatively little on his tenor sax, but he never lost his love for the lyrical, highly expressive and pleasing tone. This might indicate a musically accessible session, but that is not the case. Rathermore, it is adventurous, since there are no memorable themes to return to. All four musicians are accompanists, all four are soloists, musical lines of various importance interact, overlap and support one another continuously. It makes one think of a ample walk through an ever-changing (and yet consistant) landscape. The revolution continues.
