It was at Brooklyn's Bar LunAtico that the quartet found an incubator for their project, playing the club regularly and developing an esthetic and language all their own. Unity Quartet takes it's musical cues from many sources. From the samba jazz of the 1960s to the contemporary popular sounds of MPB, the Quartet filters these sounds into a heady New York City jazz style. The Quartet captured these sounds on December 1 and 2, 2022 at Brorby Studios. The recording begins with an arrangement of the legendary Milton Nascimento's \"Viola Violar.\" Brought in by fellow Mineiro Monterio, the simple, hymn-like tune retains a rock feeling with guitar leading with it's sing-song melody. Monterio's \"Lucena\" is an expansive folk-like ballad with complicated harmonies that lean into the Quartet's jazz feel. Musical iconoclast Hermeto Pascoal is represented with a take on his \"Santo Antonio, \" the dancing Baiao rhythm from northeastern Brazil is a perfect beat to make listeners move. Alves presents his own piece, \"Frenzy, \" a frenetic, straight-ahead piece with unpredictable, tricky rhythmic devices. Kautz's \"Samba of Sorts\" provides a perfect example of what the Quartet is trying to achieve, as it blends a 9\/8-time signature to a traditional samba. Brazilian but not. Made famous by celebrated singer Djavan, \"Jogral\" is an unusual samba with interesting harmonies and unique cadences.\"Pau de Arara\" by famed composer Luiz Gonzaga comes from an earlier generation of Brazilian music. The tune balances between baiao and forro, becoming the most traditional song in the Quartet's repertoire. That was how D'Rivera met Pepe Rivero, a pianist and composer originally from Manzanillo, thus beginning a long and fruitful musical relationship.Rivero introduced D'Rivera to other Cubans living in Spain, including drummer Georvis Pico, percussionist Yuvisney Aguilar, and bassist Reinier \"El Negrón\" Elizarde. While in Spain, D'Rivera would regularly reunite with these fantastic musicians along with the Colombian vibraphonist Sebastián Laverde. After nearly two decades of inspired collaborations, D'Rivera and the Spanish contingent have come together to form the Madrid-New York Connection Band and record their first album together, La Fleur de Cayenne. The recording was done in Madrid in December 2024 and features original songs by D'Rivera and Rivero along with a wide-ranging program of music with Latin roots, from Cuban son to Argentinean folk song and tango.The program begins with D'Rivera's \"La Fleur de Cayenne,\" a deftly challenging Venezuelan joropo, that allows D'Rivera's clarinet to dance with Laverde's vibes and churning percussion. The fantastic Spanish harmonica player Antonio Serrano is featured on Bebo Valdes' \"Miriam,\" the piece unfurling with Rivero's romantic piano and D'Rivera's warm alto sound over a lush harmonic bed. Our first sets were in a tiny function room above the Derby Arms near the Belvedere Arms in Sheen, West London where, in the late 80s, Gilles played his celebrated DJ sets. There were one-off nights culminating in our Mambo Madness parties and the Original Jazz Bops, promoted in tandem with Gilles' Mad On Jazz show on Radio London. Just imagine 1,600 hardcore jazz clubbers dancing to class tunes and live acts at the Town \u0026amp; Country Club in Kentish Town. My musical journey as a DJ peaked in the mid- to late 80s with the legendary Cock Happy and Special Branch nights and Doos At The Zoo, spread across various venues in London. There were other joint one-offs, including a memorable night dropping tuff jazz tunes from the likes of Art Blakey and Charles Earland surrounded by giant Victorian machine generators at Kew's Museum of Steam where instead of our usual banners and posters, we decorated the room with toilet paper. I also guested fortnightly on Gilles' Monday jazz night at the Wag Club getting home at 5am and at work, in body if not in mind, at 8am.
