But he understood his own mission remarkably well and has remained undaunted by the hype. His second, double-length long-player Heaven and Earth was announced via tweet: \"The Earth side.represents the world as I see it outwardly, the world that I am part of. The Heaven side.represents the world as I see it inwardly, the world that is a part of me.\" Washington reassembled his Next Step band -- which includes bassists Miles Mosely and Stephen \"Thundercat\" Bruner, drummers Ronald Bruner, Jr. and Tony Austin, trombonist Ryan Porter, pianist Cameron Graves, keyboardist Brandon Coleman, and vocalist Patrice Quinn -- supplemented by a jazz orchestra, West Coast Get Down, a symphony orchestra, and choir. Heaven and Earth is a major dose of Afro-Futurism. Earth opens with a killer cover of the theme from Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, retitled in plural here. Quinn and Dwight Trible duet on lead vocals backed by a soaring, sweeping choir atop a cooking Latin jazz groove complete with montunos from Graves and a raw-boned solo from Washington (who is on fire throughout). The other cover is a funky take on Freddie Hubbard's \"Hub-Tones,\" with layers of propulsive Latin rhythms. Dontae Winslow's jagged trumpet solo cuts across the mix before Washington's tenor answers. Of the originals, \"Connections\" is a space jazz embrace of hard bop and 20th century West Coast jazz, with great solos from Porter and Winslow, while \"Testify\" owes as much to Caribbean grooves and soul as jazz. Heaven commences with the spectral \"The Space Traveler's Lullaby,\" with its gorgeous warm brass and reeds, swelling symphony strings, and soaring wordless chorus sounds like the Gil Evans and Sun Ra orchestras playing together. \"Vi Lua Vi Sol\" features a vocoder vocal from Coleman, with Porter blowing fills and a beefy solo, swooping synth lines atop Afrobeat drumming, and a popping upright bassline. The breaks and future funk of \"Street Fighter Mas\" owes equally to Miles Davis, Lamar, and Earth Wind and Fire as the choir extrapolates on the harmonics before Washington's skittering R\u0026amp;B-drenched solo. \"Song for the Fallen\" weds angular avant-jazz and future funk to wiry fusion and a multivalent rhythmic attack -- with the choir adding a celestial bent. Heaven and Earth is more a refinement of the ideas expressed on The Epic than an entirely new paradigm. There is less wandering, more focus, more inquiry and directed movement, as well as an abundance of colorful tonal and harmonic contrasts. More than anything else, it establishes Washington as a composer and arranger of dizzying potential and still underscores his twin rep as a soloist and jazz conceptualist. But this EP, at just over half-an-hour, is, in many ways, a standalone work. It was performed in New York at The Whitney Biennial as part of a show that included a film by director A.G. Rojas and paintings by Washington's sister Amani. According to the artist, it was composed to explore \"the philosophical possibilities of the musical technique known as 'counterpoint.'\" Washington defines it as \"the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies.\" That description is, at least in this setting, akin to metaphor in the current socio-political-cultural era where flash point battles over issues of race, gender, sexual orientation, and cultural appropriation are being waged afresh.These six tunes reveal Washington's compositional and arrangement mastery. Five relatively short themes are all standalone tunes but are all embodied in the 13-minute climax \"Truth,\" which embodies tenets from all of the preceding tunes but is an entirely new holistic rainbow of sound. Washington draws heavily on numerous influences from '70s jazz here, as well as the modal influence of John Coltrane. \"Desire\" introduces a melodic theme that emerges from spiritual soul-jazz, but with Matt Haze's electric guitar and a wordless vocal chorus, it touches on everything from Billy Harper's Capra Black (second side) to Santana's Caravanserai and Norman Connors' first three albums -- in four-and-a-half minutes! It opens onto the progressive big band -- ? la Gerald Wilson -- of \"Humility,\" which sports a fleet, knotty piano solo from Cameron Graves, a soulful trumpet break from Dontae Winslow, and Washington's squalling solo above a B-3, and the interplay between two drummers (Tony Austin and Ronald Bruner, Jr.) and bassist Miles Mosely. \"Knowledge\" and \"Perspective\" make full use of CTI's illustrious palette for arrangement with an expansive horn chart. Ryan Porter's trombone solo comes right out of Los Angeles soul (the former) while Kamasi's honk and groove in the latter suggests the fleet funk of Grover Washington, Jr. and adds Thundercat on electric bass. The smooth switch gets flipped on in \"Integrity,\" whose theme and rhythms actively engage Brazilian, Latin jazz, and West African jazz. The sprawling \"Truth\" adds a choir, vibes, and a full string section as it embraces the themes of its predecessors and stretches them to the breaking point, where they seamlessly meld into a wonder of color, tempo, improvisation, and lush exotic form. Harmony of Difference reveals a gentler, more economical, but no less adventurous Washington. This is such a unique, organic recording that it's hard to make comparisons; definitely a little fusion, a little '60s Blue Note feel, and the usual Black Jazz journey to the more lyrical, pop-inspired ('Little Miss Laurie') and funk-infused ('Plastic Creek Stomp') sides of jazz, but perhaps the best comparison is late-'60s Miles before he went electric. Up next, \"Money Runner\" is another edgy funk glider, its easy-tempo moving in harmony with slinky rhythmic riffs and featuring a seemingly ad-libbed electric piano solo. Strutting along after, \"White Elephant Walk\" is another laconic, deeply stoned walking theme with electric piano and alto flutes. There follows a couple of brief \"walking\" links before the brilliantly tense \"Master Plan\" slowly builds. Expectancy grows to the main theme around a minute in and then a melodic theme builds slightly to the 3-minute mark before floating down gradually and elegantly to its climax. It's utterly fantastic. The smoky, after-hours \"Night Watch\" is a slow, cool gem featuring alto flutes and synths.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eNow we're talking, \"The Fence (a)\" is just sensational and worth buying this album all on its own. It was sampled for \"Action Satisfaction\" by J5, way way back. \"The Fence (b)\" is a slower, more deliberate version of the previous heater, but it's no less essential. Indeed, it's absolutely jaw-drooping. Closing out this remarkable side, \"Surveillance\" is another horizontal masterpiece of relaxed yet dramatic jazz-funk. Vibes ad-lib in the center section and give you an idea of how Roy Ayers making library funk in the mid-late 70s might've sounded. Sensational.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eFlip over for \"Total Silence\", a near-beatless and understated scene-setter featuring neat interplay of guitar and synthesizer themes over bass and hi-hats. The fantastic \"Drama Backcloth (1a)\" is up next, a repetitive piano and bass refrain with guitar figures over the top. Its creeping crime-funk vibe was pilfered for \"Outta Town Shit\" by Ghostface Killah in 2006. \"Drama Backcloth (1b)\" is a short, subdued version without the guitar figure. \"Drama Backcloth (2)\" features an expectant, background marimba figure over light rhythm whilst the cool \"Drama Backcloth (3)\" centers around a relaxed riff and the angular \"Drama Backcloth (4)\" presents eerie progressions with piano interjections. A dramatic action theme, it's packed with strident playing and bags of attitude. There follows 10 (ten!) drama-tinged, horn-heavy, wah-wah-laced, conga-enhanced, synth-riddled links for neat segues and maximum funk fever. \"Helicop\" is another fast-paced and energetic dramatic action background with great breaks and horns. \"The Big One (Prelude)\" has an ace bassline and creeps along superbly to create expectation and contains an amazing rolling piano loop that just stops you dead in your tracks. He became a key jazz figure in Japan in the sixties together with Norio Maeda and Keitaro Miho, both jazz pianists, composers and arrangers, by forming the Modern Jazz Three Association – which aimed at improving the level of Japanese jazz composition and arrangement. In the mid-seventies, his Contemporary Sound Orchestra explored jazz funk fusions with traditional Japanese melodies and instruments such as the shakuhachi, koto, biwa, and shamisen.
