Faced with such an embarrassment of riches, and trying to remain true to our vision of hitting a different year with each release, we decided to do what any sensible Dead Head would do: go BIG. Hence, our 8-LP release of Dick‚Äôs Picks Vol. 33! Fresh from a year-and-a-half touring hiatus, and back to full, two-drummer strength, the Dead opened for The Who as part of Bill Graham‚Äôs historic Day on the Green concerts in 1976. This Pick captures both dates in their entirety, and features one of the most monumental medleys (and that‚Äôs sayin‚Äô something!) in band history with a 60-minute, 10-song journey through ‚ÄúSt. Stephen‚Äù\/‚ÄùNot Fade Away‚Äù\/‚ÄùSt. Stephen‚Äù\/‚ÄùHelp on the Way‚Äù\/‚ÄùSlipknot!‚Äù\/‚ÄùDrums‚Äù\/‚ÄùSamson and Delilah‚Äù\/‚ÄùSlipknot!‚Äù\/‚ÄùFranklin‚Äôs Tower‚Äù\/‚ÄùOne More Saturday Night‚Äù on the first day. Day two offers excellent takes on two solo Garcia favorites, ‚ÄúMight as Well‚Äù and ‚ÄúThe Wheel,‚Äù that were new to the concert repertoire and a particularly fine ‚ÄúRamble on Rose‚Äù among other highlights.  Bill Graham had honored the Dead by selecting them to close the year‚Äôs stellar series of Day on the Green concerts, and that‚Äîperhaps coupled with the presence of formidable co-headliners The Who‚Äîsparked some of the band‚Äôs finest performances of the period. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBut it‚Äôs not just the performances, or the fact that we hadn‚Äôt done a 1976 vinyl reissue, that drew us to this concert. This ‚ÄúBetty Board‚Äù is one of the cleanest recordings in the whole series, and with a fresh mastering for vinyl by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering, lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music, and a pressing on 180-gram black vinyl by our friends at Gotta Groove Records, this is‚Äîdare we say it‚Äîthe best-sounding Dead vinyl release we‚Äôve done. Seriously‚Ķthe test pressings (which were reviewed by Jeffrey Norman, Dead archivist David Lemieux and Real Gone‚Äôs Gordon Anderson) were just fantastic, so present and crisp. We‚Äôve included a 4-page, full-color, LP-sized insert that captures all the extensive graphics that were on the CD release, too. In 1965, University of California student Ray Manzarek invited a fellow student, singer\/songwriter Jim Morrison, to join his and his two brothers' R\u0026amp;B band, Rick And The Ravens. Manzarek then recruited drummer John Densmore. His brothers then dropped out of the group, replaced by guitarist Robbie Krieger. The group, now named the Doors, became popular on the Los Angeles club scene. Elektra recording artists Love recommended the group to their label, which signed them in 1966. THE DOORS, released in 1967, showcased Manzarek's flowing organ and Morrison's dramatic voice. The group achieved massive success, but Morrison's frustration with his role as a pop idol grew ever more pronounced. In July 1969, following a concert in Miami, he was indicted for indecent exposure, public intoxication and profane, lewd and lascivious conduct. Although he was later acquitted of all but the minor charges, the incident forced the group to cancel its next few months of concerts. MORRISON HOTEL, a tough R\u0026amp;B-based collection, matched the best of their early releases. However, Morrison now preferred to write poetry. Having completed sessions for a new album, he escaped to Paris to pursue a literary career. On 3 July 1971, he was found dead in his bathtub. The official cause was a heart attack. LA WOMAN, Morrison's final recording with the Doors, is one of their finest achievements, including 'Riders On The Storm'. The surviving Doors soldiered on for two more albums before disbanding. Six years later, MGMT return to Tarbox Road Studios a more confident and self-assured band, and the difference is palpable. Like Congratulations, MGMT is an album that continues to eschew hooky singles for pop experimentation that isn't afraid to stay melodic, at least initially. While the album feels daring all the way through, early tracks like \"Alien Days\" feel relatively straightforward, mining the ornate pop sound of their previous effort. As MGMT continues, though, an unraveling process starts to happen, with the songs becoming increasingly strange as the album progresses through its latter half. It's in this section that the band makes the most of Fridmann's talents as a producer and engineer, sending the songs into outer space with layers of reverb-drenched synths and crunchy electronics. Although it's clear that their infectious, single-heavy debut was no accident, the more experimental aspect of MGMT seems to be their dominant side. And that sense of unforced, unpretentious ease is fundamental to what makes Innerspeaker so simply, viscerally pleasurable: there's so much that Tame Impala get so wonderfully right here --?a distinct but understated undercurrent of melody, a relaxed but ever-present sense of groove, a crystal crispness and deliberateness to the sound even when it's treated with a healthy dousing of buzz and reverb --?without seeming like they're trying at all hard. Despite a classic power trio configuration and relatively limited use of overdubbing, the album frequently feels so sonically massive, so thick with ringing guitars, walls of effects, and tremendous, reverberating drums, that it's hard to believe it's the work of a mere threesome. Kudos are perhaps in order to neo-psych mainstay Dave Fridmann, who mans the mixing boards here with a relish and restraint that helps make this one of the most tasteful (and tasty) records on his recent r?sum?. Credit frontman Kevin Parker's lazily drawled, remarkably Lennon-esque vocals, too, (frequently Leslie'd or otherwise processed, which helps) with giving the album an extra air of free-floating authenticity (while only occasionally giving up anything as specific and tangible as a substantially intelligible lyric). It's only infrequently that individual songs manage to stand out from the surrounding fluid, atmospheric haze -- typically when the band decides to leave its hooks a bit of space to breathe, as on the chunky, chugging closer \"I Don't Really Mind\" or the crisp, snakily phased guitar lick cementing the deliciously poppy \"Solitude Is Bliss.\" But the dearth of standout tracks here hardly feels like an issue --?indeed, Innerspeaker coasts so beautifully on its blissful, billowing waves of sound that readily discernible hooks almost seem like gratuitous distractions. ~ K.
