Several months before Bruner picked up a Grammy for \"These Walls,\" off To Pimp a Butterfly, he issued an EP anchored by \"Them Changes.\" His funkiest, sweetest, most vulnerable song, it reappears as the top highlight on Drunk, a fragmentary and scattered program relative to the Thundercat full-lengths that preceded it. Bruner is still fueled by numerous forms that immediately preceded his birth -- smooth soul, soft rock, jazz fusion, synth funk, new wave, all late '70s\/early '80s -- and filters them through his soft-hearted, mischievous personality. He surrounds himself with a slightly different cast of old and newer associates, including the first three figures listed above, keyboardist Dennis Hamm, drummer Louis Cole, and producer Sounwave. Bruner dreams about being a cat (replete with meowing background melody), pens a tribute to Japanese pop culture (\"Just point me to the Pachinko machines\"), and delivers a sarcastic jingle regarding social media fatigue (\"I'm out here probably doing the most\"). Love and mortality remain Bruner's strongest subjects, placed on full display in terse but touching ballads like \"Lava Lamp,\" \"Jethro,\" and \"3AM.\" In \"Show You the Way,\" another bright spot, he swaps verses with Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins, two of his heroes, to swirling and balmy effect. Like cartoons at a horror movie festival, the tracks compiled on this posthumous LP worked as comic relief, a catharsis of sorts, and not surprisingly some of this was the best Black Flag stuff, like the ode to drunkenness \"Six Pack,\" the reveling-in-media babysitting \"T.V. Party,\" the hilarious slaughter of \"Louie, Louie\" that would make the Metallic KO Stooges proud, and the nuts-on-parade of \"Wasted,\" had it been released in the late '50s. A pretty smart release, as opposed to the usual post-breakup greatest-hits LP; this will change the minds of so many who persisted in thinking of Black Flag as a one-dimensional, Armageddon-is-coming nihilist hardcore act, or one bereft of brains or humor. Black Flag's astonishing burst of productivity from 1984 to 1985--five studio albums, a live record, and an experimental EP--created a lot of impressive music, but LOOSE NUT is the pinnacle. Albums like FAMILY MAN and SLIP IT IN had seen the band experimenting with everything from Sabbath-like metal to spoken-word to lengthy jazz-tinged instrumental explorations, all of them pretty much ignoring the hardcore velocity of earlier records like DAMAGED and JEALOUS AGAIN. LOOSE NUT returns that early aggression and speed to the band's more experimental sound, and the results are devastating. \"This Is Good,\" one of Henry Rollins's most anguished songs, is the clear highlight, but the sardonic \"Bastard in Love\" and the brutal \"Annihilate This Week\" are nearly as powerful. Capping two years of exhausting productivity--four studio albums, a live album, and an instrumental EP--IN MY HEAD finds Stevenson, singer Henry Rollins, bassist Kira Roessler, and guitarist Greg Ginn moving back toward straightforward punk after a period spent exploring jazz-tinged heavy metal. Neither as manic as the band's earliest material or as sluggish as the fruit of its metal-thud era, the 12 songs on IN MY HEAD are mostly mid-tempo rockers with plenty of room both for Rollins' political broadsides and Ginn's metallic solos. Black Flag's second EP, 1980's JEALOUS AGAIN finds the band with a new lead singer, Chavo, whose Everypunk vocals were less distinctive than those of his predecessor, future Circle Jerks frontman Keith Morris, but perhaps better suited to guitarist Greg Ginn's unpretentious anthems of punk life. The five speedy and short songs on JEALOUS AGAIN are practically the archetypes of hardcore punk. Where the songs on NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, the band's 1978 debut, were beholden to British punk tropes, these more streamlined songs are harder, faster, louder, and considerably more powerful.
