A few days later Hakushi blew fans away, playing live for the first time at the iconic music festival Fuji Rock in Japan.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nConsistent with Brainfeeder’s ethos of seeking out artists operating outside the confines of genre since the label started in 2008, Hakushi’s music is tricky to categorize as it straddles a few genres: alternative, electronic, jazz, pop\/J-pop. Sometimes it’s pretty, at times it’s very intense and fast-paced. Releasing since 2018, they’ve already made a name for themselves domestically in Japan with a string of wonderfully wild releases and started to build a cult following internationally. Collabs to date have included Kid Fresino, yuigot, TOKYO SKA PARADISE ORCHESTRA, Yukichikasaku\/men and Eye from Boredoms.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nIn September 2023, Hakushi created the soundtrack for the noir kei ninomiya Spring\/Summer 2024 runway show for Comme des Garçons at Paris Fashion Week. They were also the focus of a cover-to-cover takeover at Yuriika [Eureka] for November’s issue of the mainstream Japanese literary magazine specializing in poetry and criticism.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nHakushi’s debut album “Air Ni Ni” (2019), cemented their reputation as one of Japan’s most exciting, adventurous artists. There's a strange sense of the old and new throughout, the sentimental and utopia, with nary a hint of darkness. Even when the album dips into the hyperkinetic rhythms of jungle, the melodies and mood still retain a sense of gentle warmth. The track's lush detuned synths and syncopated drums are girded by stern low end frequencies. Drum and bass, jungle and hardcore are the touchstones here, but the forms he creates make no attempt to imitate the music of those eras. Take the rolling, bubbling, almost jazz-drummer patterns of 'Yeah, I Like It' and 'I Want You'†where strange pops and bubbles seem to be forced through the grid almost like they're an effect of pressure. It's an odd juxtaposition next to the soulful vocals but an effective one. 'Edge Of Darkness' meanwhile, is an intense, rough ride of sliding rhythms and elephantine bass. Elsewhere, like on 'A New Consciousness', things are tempered into a more streamlined techno-like hybrid.
