Nachtmystium's 2010 album, "Addicts - Black Meddle Pt. II" remains a timeless classic. This album stands as a cornerstone of the US black metal scene. Period. It completed the steps that mastermind Blake Judd had started to take with the previous album, "Assassins - Black Meddle Pt. I" (2008), by taking basic ingredients from the fabled Nordic second wave of black metal and adding to them. This move had sent the American cousin of the harsh style down a different path than that already taken many times before by the European instigators. "Addicts - Black Meddle Pt. II" is full of surprises as it draws from a wide variety that include British New Wave (in case the distant echo of A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS has gone unnoticed), PINK FLYOD psychedelia, and other genres that most people would hardly associate with black metal. Innovative, thrilling, and outstanding - at the end of the year, "Addicts - Black Meddle Pt. II" appeared on many "Best of 2010" lists of critics and magazines around the globe. This success opened doors for them to influential and prestigious festivals such as Inferno in Oslo, Norway and Roadburn in Tilburg, the Netherlands. Yet the cracks were beginning to show. At the time, few would have guessed that the title was in part a statement of Blake Judd realising that a severe drug addiction had him already in it's claws and drawing him ever deeper into a personal miasma and an enduring fight for survival. The band began to be plagued by internal trouble and line-up changes. Friendships, business, relations with fans, trust, and income also went down.
