Louis Gottschalk (1829-1869) was the first American pianist and composer to win international fame. His creative use of the colorful and exotic musical idioms of his native New Orleans foreshadowed by some fifty years the appearance of these same influences in early jazz.

Author Biography

The late Vernon Loggins was a well-known critic, biographer, fiction writer, and teacher. He received his doctorate from Columbia University and was a member of the faculty there, in addition to teaching at Chicago, Minnesota, New York University, and, in France, the Universities of Lille and Strasbourg. His numerous books include Chasons du Midi, The Negro Author, I Hear America, and The Hawthornes.
