NICK THE KNIFE (Vinyl)
This is Nick Lowe's first album after the demise of Rockpile and he took the occasion to head in several new directions. Actually three-quarters of his erstwhile combo are on hand, the notable absentee being Dave Edmunds, with whom the rift formed which scuttled the band. Though things cut loose at times, in general this is a more relaxed affair than LABOUR OF LUST. Two songs ("My Heart Hurts" and "Too Many Teardrops") were penned with his then-wife Carlene Carter, who also contributes backup vocals. "Queen Of Sheba" is pure Lowe, as he sings, "You ain't no Queen of Sheba" and then names the song after her. "Couldn't Love You (Any More Than I Do)" finds him again drawing inspiration from The Everly Brothers (he and Edmunds did an EP of their songs a couple years prior).
