Meyer: Choral Works [CD]

This album presents four a cappella works for mixed choir by Krzysztof Meyer, setting poetic texts of philosophical and spiritual depth. At it's centre stands Te Deum, a work the composer refined over nearly three decades; the version heard here marks it's first recording in the form finally approved by Meyer himself. Also recorded for the first time are three of the four songs to texts by Friedrich Schiller, remarkable for both their poetic richness and their luminous melodic and harmonic writing.The stylistically distinct Wieliczalnaja, echoing the sonorities of Orthodox sacred music, adds a striking contrast to the programme. Together, these choral works reveal the lyrical side of Meyer's art - far removed from earlier compositional experimentation - shaped instead by perfect balance, clarity of form and beauty of sound. Under the direction of it's founder, the choir 'Collegium Cantorum' once again demonstrates impeccable technique and profound musical sensitivity.
