Concieved as a follow-up to the 1939 western Dodge City, Errol Flynn, Humphrey Bogart and Randolph Scott face off over a fortune in gold bound for the Confederacy from Virginia City. During the United States Civil War, Union officer Captain Kerry Bradford (Flynn) escapes from a Southern stockade and heads West to stop the shipment of $5,000,000 in gold raised by Southern sympathizers. There, he must overcome Southern patriot Vince Erby (Scott), outlaw John Murrell (Bogart) and the feminine wiles of dance hall singer and Confederate spy Julia Hayne (Miriam Hopkins).
